Celebrating Half a Century of Tradition:
Fifty years ago, our tradition arrived on North American shores, officially performing for the first time on March 20th, 1976 in New York City, bringing the spirit of the Golden Dragon. This year, on March 20th, we celebrate five decades of breathtaking performances, cultural preservation, and the enduring bond between our community and this ancient art form. We also honour Tie PuyiI 鐵菩夷, Shigong Jian Jin Shan 簡金山 師公, Shifu Chai Meng Woo 胡介民師傅, and Shigu Xia Fang Xiu 夏芳秀師姑, who heroically paved the way through difficult and trying times to pass on these arts and traditions for the next generation to carry the Golden Dragon’s torch forward with its theme of friendship, and encouraging harmony in our communities.
WELCOME TO THE HOME OF TRADITIONAL SHAOLIN
The Honan Shaolin Association is a not-for-profit organization tracing its roots to the Henan Shaolin Hui (河南少林會) founded in Shanghai by Shifu Jian Jin Shan (蕑金山師傅) circa 1910. In 1971, Shifu Woo Chai Meng (胡介民師傅 1912-2010), an instructor at the original Shanghai association, began teaching his first student in New York. The first team was formed in 1973 and, in 1976, registered as a not-for-profit association under the name Honan Shaolin Association, Golden Dragon Team™ 河南少林金龍會, in New York City. In 1984, Shifu Woo introduced the Shaolin Golden Dragon to the Calgary Chinese community in Canada. This first branch team was founded in 1983 and incorporated as a not-for-profit society as the Honan Shaolin Cultural and Historical Association in 1989.
